Global Maritime Distress and Safety System Radio Operator (GMDSS Radio Operator)

This course covers the mandatory competencies and the required knowledge, understanding, and proficiencies prescribed in Section A-IV/2, Table A-IV/2 of the STCW Code as amended as well as the technical and professional knowledge and qualifications of Table 47-1, Article 47 of ITU Radio Regulations; and in parallel to Chapter IV Radiocommunications of SOLAS This requires a total of 120 instructional hours to cover the subject areas enumerated in Part B – Course Outline.

Training Outcome/s

To meet the minimum standard of competence for all trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-IV/2 of the STCW Code as amended, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate the following competencies on General Operator’s Certificate for the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.
Specifically, at the end of the course the trainee should be able to:

  • Transmit and receive information using GMDSS subsystems and equipment and fulfilling the functional requirements of GMDSS; and
  • Provide radio services in emergencies

Qualification

Entry to the course is open to all marine deck officers responsible for distress and Commercial Radio Communication onboard ships. Participants must be physically and mentally fit to participate in all aspects of the training, particularly the practical exercise.
