Recognizing that effective training begins with competent instructors, UMTC, in partnership with Unitor by Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) recently hosted a comprehensive five-day Train-the-Trainer Program focused on maritime maintenance welding technologies, hot work safety, and best practices.

The WSS team was represented by Andrey Chaban, Chris Teoh, and Marlon Ilagan, who have been supportive of the development of seafarers' welding training and the center’s activities.

The intensive program gathered UMTC Workshop instructors and technical personnel for a week of learning, discussion, practical application, and assessment designed to strengthen both technical expertise and instructional capability.

The training conducted by Andrey Chaban commenced with a strong emphasis on maritime hot work safety and compliance requirements.

Participants explored current industry standards, examined real-world case studies, and reviewed common safety findings related to welding operations aboard vessels. Discussions highlighted the importance of proper equipment maintenance, risk management, and adherence to maritime safety requirements, especially OCIMF SIRE 2.0 and RIGHTSHIP RISQ 3.2.

As the program progressed, participants gained deeper knowledge of gas welding, cutting, brazing, and plasma cutting technologies. Practical sessions covered equipment and consumables selection, operational procedures, troubleshooting techniques, and safe working practices.

The focus of the training was to ensure that trainers understand not only how the equipment functions but also how to effectively communicate safety principles to learners.

The program covers electric arc welding processes, including manual metal arc welding (MMA), ACA gouging, TIG welding, and wire welding applications, using the latest UWI-Maximus 503 welding inverter. Participants explored welding consumables, machine selection, equipment setup, welding parameters, and process optimization for various shipboard applications. Discussions also covered common welding challenges, maintenance considerations, and methods for improving operational efficiency.

Throughout the training, Unitor specialists emphasized the concept of "AimZero Hot Work Safety," reinforcing the industry's ongoing commitment toward zero harm and creating safer working environments onboard vessels.

The program culminated in a final practical assessment known as the "Master of the Arc," where participants were challenged to analyze realistic shipboard repair scenarios, identify hazards, repair

methods, and demonstrate sound technical decision-making. The exercise evaluated not only welding knowledge but also safety awareness, planning, and problem-solving capabilities.

By the end of the five-day program, participants received their Certificate of Completion and, most importantly, gained valuable insights to help them deliver more effective training and contribute to safer, more efficient maintenance operations in the maritime industry.

The Train the Trainer Program reflects UMTC's continuing commitment to developing highly competent instructors and ensuring that knowledge, safety culture, and industry best practices are passed on to the next generation of maritime professionals.
