September was observed as Suicide Prevention Month, emphasizing the importance of mental health conversations and the support systems that save lives. Earlier in September, UMTC had the privilege of partnering with Grieg Star to deliver a meaningful Mental Health and Wellbeing Training session for their Crewing Personnel, tailored specifically for their employees. As we reflect on these initiatives in October, it's crucial to keep the momentum going and continue prioritizing mental health awareness.

The two-day training gathered 30 participants, including the organization’s President, Capt. Dave Osunero, together with their administration, operations, and crewing teams. Their goal was clear: to be better guided on how they can provide practical support to their seafarers.

Led by UMTC’s instructor, Jerie Baldomero, RPm, and assisted by Gianna Calumba, RPm, the sessions went beyond the usual learning modules. The participants were introduced to basic practices in identifying mental health challenges, recognizing early symptoms of mental distress, and understanding how to respond appropriately. A key highlight was training the participants in applying a referral system, ensuring that seafarers in need are connected to professional medical care teams.

To enhance the learning experience, the program employed an active-learning approach, engaging participants in case studies, role-playing exercises, and effective communication workshops. These interactive exercises helped participants practice real-life scenarios of extending support to colleagues and crew.

What started as a compliance initiative turned into something more meaningful. Grieg Star’s leadership recognized the importance of this program and plans to launch another series of this campaign, extending mental health training not only to seafarers but also to their crew officers and employees.

UMTC is grateful for the organization’s active participation and commitment to championing mental wellness. The positive feedback received from this activity reflects not only the value of the training but also a growing awareness in the maritime industry of breaking the stigma surrounding mental health.

Together, with initiatives like these, we continue to build a safer, healthier, and more compassionate workplace for our seafarers and those who support them.
