World Maritime University Visits United Marine Training Center

In March 2024, the World Maritime University (WMU) sent 15 Master of Science in Maritime Affairs students, including four Filipinos to conduct a traditional field study of maritime education and training practices in the United Marine Training Center.

During the visit, representatives from WMU interacted with UMTC's Managing Director, Engr. Donald Bautista. This provided a significant opportunity for them to learn about the center's dedication to staying at the forefront of industry trends and its commitment to education and training.

The discussions delved into the following areas:

Digitalization in the Maritime Industry: The demand to digitalize maritime systems and UMTC's effort to support and address the rapid advancements in technology and automation.

Maritime Decarbonization: The maritime sector needs to transition towards sustainable and environmentally conscious practices. UMTC's initiatives and programs to train seafarers in using alternative fuels and technologies to reduce carbon emissions are also needed.

STCW Updates: The changes and updates to the standards of training and certification and how UMTC incorporates these updates into its training curriculum to ensure seafarers are equipped with advanced skills and knowledge to meet international standards.

Inclusivity and Diversity: The importance of promoting gender inclusivity and diversity in the maritime industry, highlighting the center's equal stand by actively recruiting and training female seafarers, and providing a supportive and inclusive environment.

This exchange of knowledge and experiences between WMU and UMTC not only enriched the students' education but also emphasized the significance of fostering a diverse and inclusive maritime community.
