UMTC Offers Deck Courses to Accelerate Maritime Training




It is no secret that the maritime industry is an ever-evolving and highly competitive industry —compelling maritime training institutions and seafarers alike to stay abreast and well-equipped with the best industry practices.

The deck department is essential in vessel navigation and cargo handling & management. It is important that deck crew members undergo regular training and development courses to ensure that their seamanship knowledge, skills, and behaviours are up-to-date with industry standards.

UMTC has been providing Deck Courses that are designed to provide comprehensive training and refresher courses to maritime professionals. We provide basic and advanced training to cater to crews from all ranks. Aside from teaching the fundamentals of deck training, our courses are also designed to propel the career development of our trainees. Here is the complete list of our Deck Courses:

  1. Bridge Watchkeeping Refresher Training for Management Level Deck Officers

    This refresher course aims to review and update the knowledge, understanding, and proficiency of Management Level Deck Officers through the industry’s best management practices in bridge watchkeeping.


  2. Bridge Watchkeeping Refresher Training for Operational Level Deck Officers

    This refresher course aims to review and update the competency of Operational Level Deck Officers on the best management practices on Safe Navigation and bridge watchkeeping procedures.


  3. ChartWorld eGlobe G2 Type Specific

    To enhance the safety of navigation and bridge watchkeeping efficiency, this course is intended to train Watchkeeping Officers in the detailed operational functionality of the Chartworld eGlobe G2 ECDIS system.


  4. Crane Handling Simulator

    This course integrates theoretical lectures, practical exercises, and assessments on crane handling simulators in the safe operation of pedestal cranes and heavy lift cranes that take into account the recommendations in the applicable sections of Tables A-ll/1, A-ll/2, and A-ll/5 of the STCW Code 2010 Manila amendments and the recommended guidelines in the Code of Safe Working Practice for Merchant Seaman, ILO Convention 152, and the ISM Code.


  5. DSC and VHF Radio Communications

    To provide a thorough understanding and mastery of radio communication at sea, this training course is a combination of lectures, discussions, demonstrations, practical exercises and assessments in the use of DSC and VHF Radio communication equipment that meet the requirements of the applicable section of Table A-IV/2 specification of minimum standard of competence for GMDSS radio operators and radiocommunication at the operational level of the STCW Code 2010 Manila Amendments.


  6. Heavy Lift Course

    This course is intended to provide Deck Officers with the comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in Heavy Lift Cargo Handling and Operation.


  7. Hydro Blasting Safety Awareness and Operation

    To promote safety awareness, this course aims to develop and impart safety working practices when using high-pressure water blasting equipment.


  8. MACS3. Net and Belco Training Course

    This course aims to provide Deck Officers with the necessary competence in the use of the industry-standard, stability program Seacos Macs3. Enrollees are expected to master the loading instrument.


  9. MEG 4 Mooring Course

    Developed in accordance with OCIMF & Mooring Equipment Guidelines (MEG) 4, this course is intended to provide Deck Officers and crew members with the necessary knowledge and skills in the safe mooring equipment, mooring winch test, inspection, and maintenance of the mooring lines.


  10. Mooring Winch Testing and Operational Maintenance

    For safe testing and maintenance of mooring winches and associated equipment, this course is designed to provide Safe Working Practice training for our trainees.


  11. Operational Use of Electronic Chart Display and Information System

    This course is designed to develop the necessary knowledge, skills, and behaviours to safely and precisely navigate vessels using the ECDIS functionality and operations.


  12. Practical Deck Skills

    This practical course provides the knowledge, skills, and safe working practices for seamanship aboard modern ships. Enrollees will gain practical knowledge on knots, bends, and hitches and are expected to demonstrate necessary seamanship skills.


  13. Rigging of Pilot Ladder

    The Pilot Ladder is a special type of rope that is vital for the embarkation and disembarkation of maritime pilots. This course will train enrollees with the proper rigging and maintenance procedures when handling the Pilot Ladder to avoid chances of accidents.


  14. Safe Mooring Operation

    Mooring and anchoring are hazardous operations. This course will provide training, guidance, and practice for all seafarers in safe and efficient mooring operations.


  15. Securing of General and Heavy Lift Cargoes for Officers

    Designed to develop the competence of Marine Deck Officers on the safe stowage, lashing, and securing of general and heavy lift cargoes, this course will provide trainees with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills that are in accordance with the best industry practices.


  16. Securing of General and Heavy Lift Cargoes for Ratings

    This course aims to develop the competence of Marine Deck Ratings on the safe stowage, lashing, and securing of general and heavy lift cargoes by providing the theoretical knowledge and practical skills in accordance with the best industry practices.


  17. Ship Handling and Maneuvering for Officers

    To safely maneuver different types and sizes of vessels under various conditions, this course provides Deck Officers the knowledge, understanding, and practical skills in ship handling techniques.


  18. Ship Simulator and Bridge Teamwork with Bridge Resource Management for Officers

    To highlight the importance of communication, teamwork, and leadership during watchkeeping, ship maneuvering and other shipboard operations, this course is designed to refresh and update the knowledge and training of Deck Officers on the principles and practice of bridge teamwork and bridge resource management.


  19. Steering Course

    This steering course is intended to develop the competency and/or enhance the proficiency of seafarers who will be assigned as helmsmen.


  20. Surface Preparation and Painting

    This course provides Safe Working Practice training to ensure that trainees recognize the importance of safe testing and maintenance of mooring winches and associated equipment during surface preparation and painting.


  21. Voyage Planning using ECDIS

    This course aims to develop and improve the competency of operation level officers in voyage planning using ECDIS.


  22. Working Aloft with Scaffolding

    To promote working safely aloft or over the side of a vessel, this course aims to provide training, guidance, and safety behaviors for seafarers who will be involved in working aloft & working over the side.
