Empowering Seafarers' Families: Mental Health and Financial Wellbeing Training for Seafarers’ Wives Association of Davao, Iloilo, and Cebu
Seafarer’s Wives Association- Davao Participants
In partnership with its client, Marlow Navigation, United Marine Training Center recently conducted an interactive and insightful training program focused on Mental Health and Financial well-being for the Seafarers' Wives Associations of Davao, Iloilo, and Cebu.
Marlow Navigation spearheaded these training sessions with UMTC Instructor Jerie Baldomero, RPm. The aim was to equip seafarers' wives with essential knowledge and practical strategies to manage their mental and financial well-being while supporting their seafaring spouses.
120 enthusiastic participants immersed themselves in interactive discussions and activities each session, creating a vibrant and supportive learning environment.
Understanding the Seafarer's Journey and Family Role
The seminar addressed two critical areas of importance: Mental Health and Financial Wellbeing Awareness. The seminar began by exploring seafarers' unique and often challenging lives, emphasizing their families' integral role in their well-being.
Participants addressed their challenges while also gaining a deeper understanding of the mental health challenges seafarers face, such as lengthy periods away from home, isolation, and the stress of maritime work.
Mental Health Focus
Mental health discussions centered on managing stress, providing emotional support, and fostering resilience within families. The participants shared usual challenges, such as wives’ dual responsibilities at home, the pressure of managing financial expectations, and the impact of long-distance relationships on their marital bonds. Hearing those challenges, Baldomero provided and emphasized practical strategies for stress management and guided participants on effective communication techniques to strengthen relationships despite the distance.
Financial Wellbeing for Seafarers' Families
On the financial side, the seminar offered tailored strategies for budgeting, saving, setting financial goals, and managing income. By addressing these challenges head-on, the workshop aimed to provide seafarers' wives with the tools to make informed financial decisions and secure their families’ futures.
Additionally, personal consultations allowed for direct, one-on-one discussions between the instructor and participants, further deepening the connections made during the training.
Innovative Learnings for Future Training
The seminar was beneficial not only for the participants but also for the training center, which gained valuable insights into the unique challenges faced by seafarers' families. This exchange of perspectives will inform and enhance future strategies for UMTC’s mental health training for seafarers and their families, ensuring our programs remain relevant, practical, and impactful.
By the end of the seminar, the participants left with a greater understanding of wives' essential role in supporting their partners. They are now equipped with tools, strategies, and professional support directories to navigate seafaring life's emotional and financial complexities.
UMTC is optimistic about more collaborations to provide technical knowledge and support for seafarers' families through Mental Health and Financial Wellbeing courses.
