Methanol Dual Fuel Training in 2024

Another thrilling development in the training of new and innovative dual-fuel methanol as a marine fuel will take place in the United Marine Training Center led by Green Marine this year.

According to a study conducted by the DNV Classification Society and Singapore Maritime in 2023, there is a high demand for training on emerging maritime fuels, such as ammonia, hydrogen, and methanol, with a demand rate of 87%. This exceeds the demand rate of 75% for Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), batteries, or synthetic fuels.

To meet this demand and contribute to a greener and more sustainable future, Green Marine developed a training curriculum based on the first-hand experiences of the trainers who are captains and chief engineers who worked for more than a decade with methanol dual-fueled ships. The training program aims to provide practical knowledge and skills for seafarers on the safe handling, storage, and operation of methanol as an environment and more efficient maritime fuel.

As UMTC committed to continuously providing upgrading training to the industry, it then approached Green Marine to collaborate on bringing the new training curriculum to the Philippines. The collaboration will educate seafarers on the mandatory knowledge and skills for the arrangement and installation of machinery, equipment, and systems for Methanol Dual Fuel vessels including Basic and Advanced IGF courses.

The training is expected to commence in the 2nd quarter of 2024 at UMTC facilities, where state-of-the-art simulators and equipment will be utilized to provide hands-on training conducted by official instructors from Green Marine.
