Electro-Technical Officer Course

This Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) course aims to provide a structured training program on the specific skills and competence for the acquisition of particular skills and competence for the acquisition of the required knowledge, understanding, and proficiency of candidates for certification as ETO by Regulation III/6 of the STCW’78 Convention, as amended.

Training Outcomes

To meet the minimum standard of competence for all trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-III/6 of the STCW Code, this course is designed to enable them to successfully demonstrate their competences as Electro-Technical Officer. Specifically, at the end of the course the trainee must be able to demonstrate the competence to:

Function 1 – Electrical, Electronic and Control Engineering at the Operational Level

  • Monitor the operation of electrical, electronic and control systems;
  • Monitor the operation of automatic control systems of propulsion and auxiliary machinery;
  • Operate generators and distribution systems;

Function 2 – Maintenance and Repair at the Operational Level

  • Maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic equipment;
  • Maintenance and repair of automation and control systems of main propulsion and auxiliary machinery;
  • Maintenance and repair of bridge navigation equipment and ship communication systems;
  • Maintenance and repair of electrical, electronic and control systems of deck machinery and cargo-handling equipment; and
  • Maintenance and repair of control and safety systems of hotel equipment.

Function 3 – Controlling the Operation of the Ship and Care for Persons Onboard at the Operational Level

  • Ensure compliance with pollution-prevention requirements; and
  • Application of leadership and teamworking skills

Qualifications

Trainees intending to enroll in this course should meet the following requirements:

1. Holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following:
a. Electrical Engineering; or
b. Electronics and Communications Engineering; or
c. Marine Engineering; or
d. Industrial Technology
• Major in Electrical
• Major in Electronics
• Major in Instrumentation
2. Medically fit to enable them to participate in all aspects of the training, particularly the practical exercises.
