2023: A Year to Remember
This year marked a milestone for the United Marine Training Center as it embarked on a new era of training, development, and excellence.
Along with the center's Silver celebration, it also unveiled technological advancements, collaborations with new industry partners, and the achievement of global recognition for its quality of service.
Technological advancementOne notable advancement that stood out was the upgrade of the center's simulators for Deck and Engine courses, evolving the way marine professionals are trained. These advanced simulator upgrades from the center's provider since 2008, ARI, deliver an immersive and realistic training experience, replicating real-life conditions on board ships.
The Full Mission Bridge simulator has not only enhanced its visuals but also upgraded the bridge console to the actual equipment that can be seen on new and modern ships. In addition, it provided more than a hundred model ships to meet the specific demands of the client. Meanwhile, the mini bridge simulators were now equipped with intensified interactive displays, multi-function consoles, radars, and steering wheels, customized with 800 targets within 200 NM and can accommodate 5-day comprehensive examinations for deck trainees.
The Full Mission Engine room simulator underwent significant enhancements as well, incorporating the latest automation systems, control panels, and machinery models to accurately simulate engine room operations, including troubleshooting, maintenance, and emergencies. It also has a virtual reality component that allows trainees to interact with the simulated engine and learn through hands-on experience.
These advancements have positioned UMTC as one of the forefronts in marine training and development. The ability to replicate real-life conditions on board ships is invaluable for professionals to gain practical experience in a safe and controlled setting.
Technological advancementMoreover, the upgrades also include new training with the newest partner of the center- Green Marine Services. In 2024, the new partnership will lead to a comprehensive Methanol Dual Fuel Training Program, that focuses on all the components and systems involved in operating with methanol dual fuel technology including Basic and Advanced IGF Course.
This collaboration aims to educate seafarers who have direct interests and control over the management and operations of vessels powered by methanol dual fuel technology and to provide mandatory training for the arrangement and installation of machinery, equipment, and systems for vessels operating with gas or low- flashpoint liquids as fuel to ensure the safety of the ship, its crew, and the environment.
UMTC is in full support by providing the facilities and needs of the trainees for the methanol dual fuel training program including access to advanced simulators that accurately replicate the operations and systems involved in operating with methanol as a marine fuel.
AchievementsIt was relevant to UMTC's 25th anniversary when the center was the first and sole recipient out of 60 applicants in the country for the honor of Seal of Integrity from the Technological Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). This is awarded to accredited assessment centers that have consistently adhered to TESDA operating procedures and quality management principles in the conduct of national assessments.
Furthermore, UMTC has also received a nomination from the Crew Connect Global Awards 2023 for the Industry Partner Category. Being one of the shortlisted global providers serves as an achievement for the center as it reflects the firm trust and confidence of the industry in the organization.
These successes highlight the recognition of UMTC's commitment to excellence in maritime training, its strong partnerships within the industry, and its dedication to providing high-quality training programs that meet the needs of the maritime industry.
CommunityDespite the simultaneous training and activities of the center, UMTC continues to give back to its community by engaging in initiatives focused on the maritime industry and training.
It was very fortunate to have another opportunity to be with the World Maritime University (WMU) and the first for the National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) to share the latest insights and developments in maritime education and training.
WMU, located in Malmö, Sweden, is a specialized university offering only postgraduate to qualified students selected by their government. It was founded in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The university focuses on maritime education, research, and capacity-building to promote safe, secure, and environmentally sustainable shipping. While NMP, a Philippine government training center, is responsible for providing specialized courses for deck and engine officers and basic safety courses for both officers and ratings.
UMTC enthusiastically welcomed its representatives and delivered a thorough presentation about the training center, relevant programs, and activities that would impart valuable insights to enhance the student's professional practices.
It was a beneficial discussion led by UMTC Managing Director, Donald Bautista, followed by a campus tour showcasing state-of-the-art facilities and simulators used for maritime training purposes. During each visit, the participants expressed their appreciation for the warm welcome and found the presentation and campus tour to be highly informative. They were impressed with the advanced facilities and simulators, which they believed would greatly contribute to their field research and practical learning.
Lastly, as thanksgiving for the triumphs it continuously received, the center is privileged to have the opportunity to share the best practices and grace with its school beneficiary, Aurora A. Quezon Elementary School. The center offered donations of educational materials and food for the students to promote the significance of education, training, and community support.
It donated computer sets, monitors, and chairs that can be utilized by the students and faculty members of the school. Additionally, as UMTC advocates education and training, it also offered training to the staff and teachers at Aurora A. Quezon Elementary School on the following subject areas to be conducted by UMTC instructors starting January 2024:
- Basic Electrical Engineering Troubleshooting
- Asian Cuisine
- Baking and Pastry
Celebrating a milestone of unparalleled excellence, the United Marine Training Center proudly commemorates its 25th Anniversary on the 22nd of November.
The center was able to offer over 140 upgrading courses to 150 shipping customers, many of which are customized to the needs of the industry, and it also performs Assessments and Trade tests for the various functions. Since its inauguration, more than a million trainees either started their careers or followed upgrading training at UMTC.
As an expression of deepest gratitude to the dedicated community of trainees, faculty, staff, and partners who have contributed to UMTC's journey of growth and success, the center held the Silver Legacy event to honor and appreciate everyone's unwavering support and commitment.
The night was attended by esteemed guests, and industry partners, including influential maritime industry leaders and local government officials whose presence truly highlighted the impact UMTC has made in shaping skilled seafarers and advancing maritime education over the past 25 years.
Mr. Donald Bautista, UMTC Managing Director, officially welcomed the evening by delivering his message of gratitude and recognition to all people who greatly contributed to the achievements and milestones reached by the center throughout the years.
Followed by the heartfelt presentation of "The Untold Story" where testaments of the tenured employees were heard for the first time, shedding light on their experiences and how UMTC fosters lifelong connections and personal growth.
The President of the center, Antonio Galvez Jr., also imparted his earnest remarks and words of wisdom, reflecting on the center's humble beginnings and expressing his pride in how far UMTC has come.
It was truly a remarkable evening as the Center was able to celebrate the milestone with its founding chairman, Mr. Hernan Eden, who shared his vision for UMTC and expressed his joy in seeing it flourish into a prestigious institution.
UMTC took this opportunity to recognize the partners who have consistently collaborated with the center to provide world-class training programs, cutting-edge facilities, and equipment continuously and successfully, and industry-relevant training by presenting them the Partners in Excellence appreciation plaque.
The night was filled with sumptuous food prepared by UMTC’s own Culinary Training Department and energetic performances from talented musicians. All in all, the Silver Legacy celebration of UMTC was a fitting tribute to the center’s remarkable journey and a great event recognizing the invaluable contribution of all those who have been part of UMTC’s success.
Undeniably, this year has seen significant events for the training center, widening diverse opportunities, strengthening partnerships, and making a positive impact not only in the maritime industry but also in the local community through education and support initiatives.
2023 has been challenging yet a rewarding year.
