UMTC DEVELOPS WEBINARS TO SUSTAIN ONLINE LEARNING
The COVID-19 outbreak has challenged UMTC in a lot of ways –– encouraging UMTC in making the efforts to adapt and conquer both online and blended learning. For the past few months, UMTC has been working passionately to develop company-specific and generic Online Learning courses to accommodate high volume training. Anti-Piracy, Pre-Departure Briefing & Safety Awareness are UMTC’s company-specific courses that utilize distinct information, policies, and procedures required in the workplace. While HAZMAT, Fuel Management, Ships Safety Officer, and Online Train the Trainer are UMTC’s generic courses that are developed based on international and local regulations for onboard application. As for how UMTC has ultimately conquered online learning, here’s an overview of the extensive webinar courses:
Company-Specific Courses
Anti-Piracy Awareness
While on-board, it is unavoidable for ships to pass through pirate-infested areas. UMTC crafted this course to ensure that officers are updated on the risks of piracy at sea. UMTC mandated company-specific control measures and reporting based on the 2020 Oil Companies International Marine Forum - BMP5. This training includes guidelines and management on how to prevent, act and behave when faced with piracy-related situations.
Pre-departure briefing
Pre-departure briefings (PDB) are necessary to prepare the signing crew and keep them updated and informed on their roles and responsibilities at sea. PDB will help trainees understand their objectives for them to meet company expectations with full mastery.
Safety Awareness Program
Safety Awareness Program is designed to refresh and update crew on Risk Management, focusing on safety-related matters in seafaring. This course aims to accustom crew with risk assessment methods and best practices using realistic scenarios.
The company-specific courses listed above are open for customizations to fit company's SMS policies and procedures.
Learning is the only thing the mind never exhausts, never fears, and never regrets.

Train the Trainer for Online Training
For the web-based training of instructors, UMTC implemented Train the Trainer for Online Training, a course that not only develops the necessary knowledge and skills in operating generic off-the-shelf software and applications but also teaches methodologies and techniques to deliver interactive online training.
Apart from the web courses outlined above, UMTC is collaborating with the Marlow Navigation Training Consultant to develop blended learning solutions that combine both instructor-led distance learning and face-to-face assessment and certification. To advance a blended learning approach by a cloud-based simulation, UMTC is currently merging with leading simulator vendors. Voyage Planning using ECDIS, Tropical Storm Navigation Ship Handling, and Maneuvering are a few of the courses UMTC is developing.
UMTC sustained online learning despite a global pandemic by developing webinar courses to accommodate the high demand for training while working to provide blended learning solutions that grant extra access to education. UMTC upholds the principle that nobody deserves to be denied high-quality training. Elevate your seafaring skills and knowledge with the available webinars offered by UMTC.
