Securing of General and Heavy Lift Cargoes for Officers

The course is designed to create competence for marine deck officers on the safe stowage and securing of general and heavy lift cargoes in accordance with the best industry practices. The course provide the trainees with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills in accordance with the best industry practices.

Intended Learning Outcome/s

After the training/assessment, the participant/s shall be able to:

  • Determine the vessel’s stability
  • Discuss the six freedom of motions encountered by the vessle’s underway
  • Explain the mechanical, dynamic, biological, chemical and climatic stresses
  • Differentiate the ship’s framing system
  • Determine the principal causes or loss or damage to cargo
  • Identify the importance and usage of dunnage and beddings
  • Identify the location of the cargo and its stowage on board
  • Calculate the bending moments of the cargo in the stowage position
  • Determine the permissible are load of the stowage positionCalculate the bending moments and the beddings ( timber and steel)Calculate forces acting on the cargo
  • Differentiate Alternative and Advance Lashing Calculation Method
  • Prepare a complete lashing arrangement of a cargo
  • Determine the stowage and securing of non standardized cargo as per Annex 13 of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage Cargo and Securing
  • Explain the documents that carried on board the general cargo vessels for cargo documentation.
  • Differentiate the types of cranes and their respective safety guidelines, use of a spreader, slinging arrangement
  • Explain the uses and characteristics of securing equipment
  • Discuss the maintenance procedure of lashing equipment
  • Discuss the inspection procedure of lashing materials
  • Plan and assess a comprehensive stowage and securing plan using the Advance Calculation Method
  • Apply proper lashing and securing arrangement.
